- I'd like the ability to automatically prune my backups. For example, instead of having an option to keep the last N backups, I'd like the option to one backup for each of the last 12 months, one backup for each of the last 4 weeks and daily backups for the last 30 days.
- I'd like the ability to split my backup sets after the fact so that, for example, i can create a point-in-time backup set at the end of the month for archiving purposes.
Not really sure where to put this request in, this seems like the place. I've written a program to automate my backup-checks. My main problem is that in the version-xxxx.xml files - in each fileInfo element - there is no totalSize element (only chunks of the file where I have to iterate over each one - adding the different size chunks). I have 25 clients (at this time) - each with 2-3 ~3GB database files. Having to iterate over every chunk, of every sql database file for every client - takes quite awhile. Is there anyway a totalSize element could be added to the fileInfo element ?
Im sure that sounds much more simple than it really is :P
I agree with elindydotcom. This capabilty would give us the ability to do full grandfather, father, son backups! Disk space is also an issue since I charge my customers for the amount of space they use.
I have seen it calld Grandfather, Father, Son backups where you get say Monday - Saturday, then every Sunday you get a weekly, then every month you get a monthly, then yearly at the end of each year.
This is a good archival backup system.
I currently do 30 versions of each client's data.
Then backup my Logmein backup Storage PC with Storage Craft Shadow Protect.
This backs up my Logmein Backup Storage PC with the abillity to restore back to any 15 minute point in time for the last 30 days, then has daily, weekly, monthly backups.
With this set-up I get the abillity to restore my Logmein Storage PC to nearly any point in time so I can restore not only the backups, but recover the Logmein Backup Storage PC in case of complete failure.
This also has Hardware Independant Restore so you can restore the whole PC to completely different hardware, including a virtual environment (Which can be used to get the Storage PC back running within minutes of complete failure until you have time to rebuild the main Logmein Storage PC)
Currently looking to add "bare metal restore" (off-line mode restore, independent of OS) for servers & workstations.
Open file backup capability (e.g. Outlook .pst files when Outlook is left open using MS "shadow copy").
Currently evaluating Druvaa.com product which does all of these things - would like to stay with Logmein products & US based company. Please look to increase ability to do full system restore (image based) as an option.
Overall a nice current product - but trying to stay ahead of competition we are up against in market place.
Backups need to actually start transferring data sooner. For backups of systems with a large number of files it can take a significant amount of time to begin transferring data. It would be a good idea to begin transferring data as files are found that need to be backed up. This should help to reduce backup times.
Allow for a restart of backups. If a system (either client or server) loses contact, allow the backup to start again where it left off when the connection is reestablished. This may need to include a configurable timeout option.
