This change seems to be designed to nudge people using LogMeIn Free to manage many machines towards the Pro product. I'm not sure why so many posters here are doing that in the first place though. The website is a much better place for viewing the status of and connecting to many machines. I use Free at home, and Pro internally at work and for supporting larger clients. The desktop shortcuts are a great help when it comes to individual employees accessing their own machines. That's probably why they chose to remove the feature for Free users.
To be fair, corporate customers really should be paying something at least. But, it seems to me that the desktop shortcut feature is most useful to Free users in general -- not just corporate users. Free users are the ones who most likely have just one or two machines they want to connect to. It's definitely not worth upgrading to Pro for the desktop shortcut feature alone.
The bottom line is that a change in price structure would have been a better route to go. Have Free for personal use, some sort of low-cost Standard version for business use, and the Pro version for those who need the extra features. The Free version will now be lacking a feature that basically all the other free alternatives have some form of. Logging into the website isn't the worst thing in the world, but it is annoying. Now it's annoying and I'd feel resentment every time I have to do it. No thanks. There are too many other options out there. And if I'm using another product, why not check out the pro version of that product for our internal/client use too? and so on, and so forth. Thanks for the email.
