How to install a Hamachi gateway PC

What are the steps for installing the gateway PC?  The only way I've seen is to add a PC as a client, then delete the client, then readd as the gateway.   But when it is done in this order, the gateway PC does not take on an IP address from its subnet.  It has an 5.x.x.x IP address.

Thanks,

John

Re: How to install a Hamachi gateway PC

Got it working by installing the client connection first and have it sitting unassigned, then create the network.  Creating the network first, then assigning the gateway does not work.  Also since I'm installing on a VM, had to turn on the "Promiscuous Mode" on my VMWare virtual switch.

If you have already created the network, then you want to click edit to the right of the Network Name, then choose add/remove members.  You can specify members AND the gateway at the same time.

Re: How to install a Hamachi gateway PC

Hi Sean,

I tried two paths that didn't work.  Sometimes the gateway radio button/check box is available when adding a member to the network, sometimes it is not.

The first was Add Network, create network as Gateway, Add member which install Hamachi on the client I was using, then finish.  When finished the client I was on had hamachi setup as a member, not a gateway, which should not happen because the first computer on that type of network needs to be the gateway.

I then did Add Network, create network as Gateway, and this time did not add any members, and finished.  Then added a member, installed hamachi on my PC, and used the Edit link to attach Hamatchi loaded on my PC into the new network.  When this happened the PC I was on attached as a member and not the Gateway.  If I unattached that PC then reattached it, it would display a radio button that I could click and specify as a gateway.

If the member is created first, then a new network is added, the installation process sees the available member and they can be added as the gateway during initial setup.

I think Hamachi should also pop up a window asking if the gateway is installed on a Virtual Machine.  If Yes then display a warning message about Promiscuous Mode especially if right after the Hamachi client on the gateway gets the message to reconfigure in gateway mode, it can no longer connect to the logmein.com server.

Thanks,

John

Re: How to install a Hamachi gateway PC

Hi Sean

For me this only worked when I linked the clients to my Logmein.com account.  The, I could see the radio button under "Gateway".

I think that there is an issue about the usability as I was looking for this under "Settings" and not "Add/Remove members".

Thanks You

Re: How to install a Hamachi gateway PC

There are criteria that must be met for you to enable a client as the Gateway.

  • If on a Domain, the client must be running a server OS
  • The client cannot be Windows 2000
  • The client cannot be a member of any other network
  • The client cannot be a guest on your account.

One more point that can cause issues is that the OS must know how to Bridge adapters.  2003 SBS does not by default, but can be configured to do so at a later time, but 2003 Standard or better does.

Re: How to install a Hamachi gateway PC

Hi Sean,

The problem described with SBS-2003 is exactly what rendered my server unavailable in the network. After re-installing the client the server was issued a 5. address as primary address. What would be the solution to apply a correct bridging?

Re: How to install a Hamachi gateway PC

Hi all, I read some "how-to" docs but I don't understand how to practically do what I want.

I have a firewalled PC on location W (exit passing by a proxy: now I'm writing from that PC).

I have a PC (behind the provider's NAT) on a location H.

I want to use the pc in H as a Gateway, so that, when Hamachi is active, all my traffic will pass through the PC in H and won't be filtered anymore.

I installed Hamachi, set up a network on PC in H, joined it with the PC in W, but it says "Relayed Tunnel, Blocked".

Strange, since it can see it and connect to it.

Anyhow, even if it worked, I don't see any "Gateway" options. so I really can't figure how I can set all my connection to use the pc in H as a bridge to the external world.

Any hints?

thanks

Ah... I also installed LogMeInPro, but on the web interface, under "users", there are no buittons or anything to add a user.

I'm lost...
