How to route all internet traffic through Hamachi?

I have HamachiX working perfectly however I want to direct all of my network traffic through Hamachi.

I use public Wifi almost daily and am concerned about security.  So I want to route all of my internet traffic (email, web browsing, etc) through Hamachi to my home Mac Mini then out to the internet.

How can I do this?

From what I gather sending ALL your internet traffic through Hamachi is a real pain , however sending all browser traffic and email traffic thru it is quite easy if you have another computer that's always on the net.  All you need to do is set up one of the free Proxy servers on your other computer, then configure your browser to use that proxy server.  It works great for me using FreeProxy, and I'd be happy to give you more detailed instructions upon request.

Re: How to route all internet traffic through Hamachi?

Bill,

Here's how I did it.  Keep in mind that this is routing everything in your web browser thru the VPN and Proxy, not ALL internet traffic.

1. Make sure Hamachi is installed on your client (we'll call it laptop) as well as your server (we'll call it home computer) and that Hamachi can see the other machine.

2. Download and install FreeProxy on the home computer.  You can find it here: http://www.handcraftedsoftware.org/index.php?page=4&action=file&file_id=5

3. Open FreeProxy and double click on the "ports" line item.  Name can be anything, Protocol must be HTTP Proxy, Client Port is any port you wish to use (I use 8080 but it's up to you since nobody else will be able to connect to this proxy server anyways).  Now here's the important stuff: Local Binding should be set to your home computers Hamachi adapter, and the IP address should be the home computers Hamachi IP.  Remote Binding can be set to "use any adapter" and IP can be set to "use any IP".

4. On your client computer configure your web browser to use the home computer Hamachi IP as the Proxy Server and make sure the port matches what you put in FreeProxy for your HTTP Proxy Server port.

There you go, as long as the client to server Hamachi link is up your web browser now securely routes all your browser traffic back to your home computer before it goes out to the internet.

On a side note, you may want to use a Proxy Server configuration program to quickly enable and disable proxy servers in your web browser.  No need to use the proxy server when you are at home, and this will just slow down your browsing anyways.  I use a free product called Advanced Proxy Manager that once configured allows you to turn on and off the proxy settings in your browser with just a click.  You can find that here: http://www.codeplex.com/AdvancedProxyManager/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=1919

I'm very sorry that I had to delete your post. This forum supports Hamachi business users only. Hamachi gamers can visit either https://forums.hamachi.cc or http://logmeinwiki.com.

Re: How to route all internet traffic through Hamachi?

Hi there, might seem a little strange but i only need Hamachi for the sole purpose to access some files hosted on my home PC, internet relay via that pc in not needed and I dont want the extra bandwidth usage to cause the vpn link to be slower. Is this proxy sharing feature disabled by default? and if not will it cause speed issues if I dont actaully utilize it as the above post explains..??

Re: How to route all internet traffic through Hamachi?

Is Hamachi a VPN or not?  If internet/network traffic does not travel down the VPN tunnel, then it is not IMHO a VPN.

Maybe I'm missing a detail, but how is Hamachi better than sharing a network connection (a poor-man's PPTP VPN) in XP or Vista?

Hamachi is definitely a VPN.  Everything through the VPN tunnel is encrypted, though not all data on your computer automatically goes through the VPN tunnel.  Hamachi is better than sharing a connection because you don't have to be local to share it.  You can access fileshares and play games remotely by accessing the private IP, and you don't need to poke holes in your firewall to do it.
