Is there a reason why an os x client cannot act as a gateway?

I have a late 2011 model mac mini with os x 10.7.2 on a gigabit lan.  I also have a nas with 3tb of storage that has afp shares on the mac.  I want to be able to access the nas from my mac bookpro when I am on the road.  So after reading through all the documentation the best way of doing that is to create a gateway setup using hamachi.  The problem is that hamachi cannot act as a gateway on a mac....why is that?  This is a HUGE issue and one hell of a problem.

Re: Is there a reason why an os x client cannot act as a gateway?

Hello mweisberg,

Thank you for your comments and welcome to the community!

The reason we are unable to offer this type of network on a Mac computer is that a Gateway network requires the Operating System to support Network Bridging. Currently Mac OSX does not support Network Bridging so we have no way of implementing Gateway networks on Mac OSX from a design standpoint.

I hope this helps to clarify.

Is there an alternate configuration to hamachi that would provide a similiar solution?

Hello again mweisberg,

Unfortunately there would not be a Hamachi network type (besides a Gateway) that would offer connection to other devices inside the LAN of the gateway computer.
