Passwordless is possible - today!

What is Passwordless?

Passwordless login is a new way to access your LastPass Vault without having to enter your master password. Once set up, you will simply authenticate, rather than having to type a password to access your vault.  Here’s how to set it up.

So, do I need my master password?

Yes, for now. There are three scenarios where you'll need your master password: 1) to set up passwordless login, 2) in case of a failed authentication attempt, or 3) to make security changes to your account. Eventually, LastPass will remove the master password altogether, but that takes time. This is just the first step in LastPass' passwordless journey.

Is the Authenticator app the only way to use Passwordless?

The LastPass Authenticator app is the first authentication method to be released. Over the next few months, LastPass will be introducing additional methods to log into your vault including biometrics and security keys like Yubikey.

Re: Passwordless is possible - today!

I've tried to enable this today and all I'm getting is:

Account settings conflict

Something in your account settings is preventing you from enabling passwordless login.

Read this support article to solve the problem and continue to a passwordless future.

I've clicked through to the linked article which doesn't offer any help with the error.

It fails at step 6 on this page: https://support.lastpass.com/help/how-do-i-enable-passwordless-login-for-my-vault

Re: Passwordless is possible - today!

Hi @inkymortar,

At this time, passwordless login for your vault can only be used via the LastPass Authenticator. For this reason, all other multifactor authentication options must be disabled except for the LastPass Authenticator. Your account appears to have Microsoft Authenticator enabled currently.

Re: Passwordless is possible - today!

Sadly, it's not possible today for me.

So I responded to the news by enabling Passwordless on my laptop.  The iPhone app duly downloaded and linked to my account, all looks good.  Then I try to actually log in.  I get the notification, I click Accept, and get a lovely green screen saying "You're in!".

But I'm not.

The laptop just goes back to the login screen.  And there's no way to bypass Passwordless and go back to entering a password.  Or even a code from the Authenticator, or a code from an SMS message.

So now I can't log in to my LastPass account at all.

When will I learn not to be an "early adopter"...

Re: Passwordless is possible - today!

What happens if I'm traveling and I lose my phone?  Unfortunately, I have a habit of leaving my phone behind at various places (memory is slipping).  Will I lose access to all my passwords?  With no way to get into the vault? Or will I be able to use anyone else's lastpass authenticator?

I'm trying to activate this on my phone and getting:

"Backup require multifactor authentication".

It's enabled so really confused here.

Re: Passwordless is possible - today!

Instructions aren't really clear but you need to disable any other MFA you might have, set up the Last Pass Auth app. After you set up with the QR code, you have to set-up AGAIN with text MFA. Complete the steps to finish setting up the LP Auth MFA on your laptop. Log into your LP App on mobile device and log-in with Master pass. It will then confirm you're MFA with LP Auth AP. Open LP Auth App and select Back-up. Confirm e-mail address. Complete.

Re: Passwordless is possible - today!

Will the authenticator app be required or can we maintain the current master password method. Due to the fact that I work in a secure facility we are not allowed the use any outside devices within the facility at all.  Therefore use of the authenticator app is impractical & would make LastPass useless to me & my co-workers who use it as well. After using LastPass for so long & it being the best option I have ever found, I/we would hate to have to switch to a different password manager.

Re: Passwordless is possible - today!

I have a situation that I never see being discussed with passwordless login. What happens if you have multiple logins to the same site, how does passwordless login know which account you're trying to use? For example I have over 30 Google logins, how is something like that ever going to work?

Re: Passwordless is possible - today!

Do you have to use Last Pass authenticator or can we use Authy or Google authenticator? Not sure if I would switch to use your authenticator when I use Authy for years.
