What 2FA to use?

Being a bit of a n00b I'm not sure which is best.

Essentially, I'm just looking to register a phone number and then have 6 digit codes SMS'd to me when required.

But looking at the 2FA options, it seems most require an account to be made with another company or to actually have an app on your phone at all times.
Soooo..... yeah...... anyone know which I should use to fit my simple requirements?

🙂

Use the Google or LP Authenticator. It requires an app on the phone, but not a data connection. Setup with your LP account and then enter the rolling code in the app when requested.

Personally I have a Yubikey - I don't need my phone and can use it for Google, etc. also.

I would go for the [url=https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lastpass.authenticator&hl=en:20krq6tz]LastPass Authenticator[/url:20krq6tz] as it can do more then Google Authenticator.

I have both 🙂 The only downside with LP is you can't choose which to use if you have multiple registered. Which is a no-brainer really (esp. if you have a authenticator app and a Yubikey and forget one).

Re: What 2FA to use?

SMS is horribly insecure, and I wish companies would stop using it. For authenticator codes, I have switched from Google Authenticator to Authy, which allows me to use more than one device and backs up the codes. For LastPass itself I use Duo Security. I have tried LastPass Authenticator but it never worked right for me so I dropped it.

I recommend using Authy.

Hmmm.... seems we have 2 votes for LP Authenticator and 2 for Authy.

Anyone want to step in and be the tie breaker? 😄

Just use the one with the interface and features you like the most. The code generators use the exact same hashing algorithm.
