"generate password" easier to find in vault

the "generate password" feature is easily accessible outside of the vault: either from a form-fill button on any website with a password field, or from the chrome extension dropdown menu.

however, "generate password" is only available from within the  vault in the "Advanced Options" section, which is very unintuitive.

I suggest that the "generate password" feature be made accessible from two more places within the vault:

1. in the "Edit Password" modal where you can modify a website's existing password, you should be able to generate new passwords (this is actually a very common use case, as websites often periodically require you to update your password).
2. in the "+" icon menu in the vault, usually just for opening the "create new password" modal. it makes a lot of sense from a UI perspective that the "+" icon should make it possible for me to create a new password for easy copy-pasting, without having to fill out a form or saving the generated password to LastPass

TL;DR

All I want is a simple button to bring up the password generator, and allow that to populate the password in the New Password screen within the Vault Website (for people who - in particular situations, cannot use the web extension/mobile apps)

I am a LastPass personal user, and use LastPass for 'work' passwords too, as my company hasn't agreed on a password manager solution at this stage.

Being a large enterprise, this means I can't install the LastPass browser extension - which obviously makes the experience less seamless.  This also, importantly means that I have to use the 'Vault' website, to access passwords on my work computer.  I consider it a 'must have' that I can 'paste' a password - so mobile apps are out in this case.

If I have to 'create' a new password at work - there is currently no way (inexplicably) to generate a password from within the 'New Password' page in the web Vault.  Currently I would have to literally go to another site, or come out of the workflow, to go to the (weirdly buried - under Advanced Options - really!?) Generate Password page, copy, and paste etc.  Also - as it's evidently a single page app - I can't see how I can 'link' to the password generator separately.  There is this page.. Password Generator | LastPass - but that always assumes you're not a user, and tries to sign you up - which is also irritating

The reason this is really frustrating, is because you don't typically 'know' you need a password before you need one - and it still hits me every time - after using LastPass for years. It goes like this....

  1. Try to access secure site
  2. Realise you don't have this in your vault (after searching in Vault window)
  3. Go to create new credentials (and think - I need to save this to LastPass too)
  4. Open New Password dialog, and start typing details of the site, and the username you've chosen
  5. Get sinking feeling as you realise you either have to come out of that page and start again - or open another window to some other site to generate a password - or just make up some thing on the spot
  6. Save password in LastPass, and create user

All I want is a simple button to bring up the password generator, and allow that to populate the password in the New Password screen.

Would love to hear if anyone has a workaround - in an enterprise setting, where you can't use the browser extensions.

Giving a thumbs up to this feature request. The ability to generate a secure password is a core use case of this product and should not be considered an "advanced option" - this really needs to be more prominent in the UI.

This issue is so problematic, that I personally feel is should be reported as a major bug, not a Feature "Suggestion".

I find it absurd - and maddening - that there is no single-click method to Generate a Secure Pasword while editing or creating a password in a Windows browser. The problem is the same whether using the browser extension or the LastPass vault page directly. Every time a user wants to generate a secure password from the Edit or Add Password window, they have to 1) Right-click in the Password field to show the context menu; 2) Hover over the LastPass menu item to display the submenu; then 3) select the Generate Secure Password.

That's assuming a user can find and remember where that feature is hiding in the first place. Because Generate a Secure Password - perhaps the most important feature in LastPass - IS definitely hidden.  If you want to bury a feature, I don't see how you can do much better than hide it two levels in on a right-click menu.

The Android app has an icon right in the Password field to Generate a Secure Password - why is this not the case in Windows? It's just embarrassing,

+1 to this. Never realized this issue until I needed to do it this way but now it's mind-boggling to me how this is missing.

If you're using the browser extension and you go to Add Item > Password you get taken to a window where you can create a whole new login but there's inexplicably no way to generate a new secure password from LastPass?!?!?! HUH??? And if you go to Generate Secure Password the only option it gives you is to "fill". But there's no option to add the password you just generated directly into a new login in LastPass...........

I understand the logic here, that LastPass wants you to actually login to a website and then the extension pops up in the right-hand corner asking if you want to add that login and password to LastPass. I get it, but it's still a bad design decision/bad UI for people who want to manually create a new login in LastPass without actually going through the flow of logging in to a website.

And from the Vault, it's the exact same process except this time "Generate Secure Password" is (also inexplicably) hidden behind a menu where it doesn't even make sense being. 🤦

LauraC "Every time a user wants to generate a secure password from the Edit or Add Password window, they have to 1) Right-click in the Password field to show the context menu; 2) Hover over the LastPass menu item to display the submenu; then 3) select the Generate Secure Password."

This is actually a great workaround that you found, however, after doing some testing I found another, uhhhhh, shall we say quirk? lol.

That only works if you access the Vault from LastPass's WEBSITE. If you try to do this in the Vault opened within LastPass's EXTENSION, that context menu is either non-existent (as in Edge) or shows up but is devoid of any submenu options (as in Chrome). 🤦 again.

Please add password generate option to the add/edit password option in the Vault!

I shouldn't have to use the browser extension, copy the password, and paste it into the record - it should be in the add/edit option.

This is my first visit to the community, for exactly this feedback!

I agree.  I came here to post this same suggestion. It would be great it we could generate secure passwords from within the "Edit Password" screen.   This issue comes up when using my PC with Chrome.

Its unbelievable that the "add a password" UI doesnt have a way to generate a password.

I thought the whole idea of last pass is to generate and store secure passwords and the main usecase for manual password addition doesnt have it.
