missing file/documets

I had been working on a word doc file, which I THOUGHT I had transfered from one hard drive to another using the file manager. When I quit the doc and tried to find it later it had literally vanished. It is not on either my remote host hard drive desktop, or the hard drive I am currently using.  Has this happened to anyone? And is there a way to find these missing documents?
