Excessive scrolling in Word and Excel

A couple of my users are complaining that scrolling is uncontrollable when working in long spreadsheets or Word documents.  The amount of scrolling (either on the sidebar or using the mouse wheel) that historically would move, say, twenty lines is now moving hundreds of lines.  I'm certain that it's due to the lag in transmission from the client to the host.  Any suggestions I can share with them to control this behavior?
