Jason - great short-term workaround!
Regarding the right hand menu, we're not likely to make this floating. We are however working on releasing a new labs feature soon that breaks the "Discussion" out into it's own tab (beside Tasks) with the additional option to sort comments chronologically or reverse-chronologically, reducing the need to scroll on those lengthy discussions to see the last comment.
