Can I opt out of registering for SMS Compliance if I only use internally?

Hello!

I see no option to add a question so I am asking here. We only send text messages to our employees. To notify them about training due, payroll changes etc. How do we opt out of registering? Employees agree to text messages on their employment applications. Once they leave company, they are removed from the messaging list. Please advise how to opt out of registering. Thank you

Hi linsere, welcome to the community.

I am afraid SMS Registration is a requirement from the phone carriers, if you do not register they will not deliver your text messages. We have a lot of information available here: https://support.grasshopper.com/help/register-local-phone-number-enable-texting You can also call our toll-free support and talk to one of our representatives to get assistance starting the process https://support.grasshopper.com/contact

  • I do not text message clients for marketing purposes.

I only send text messages when a client verbally asks for a text on specific information or as a reminder. I work with elderly clients who will not 'opt in' via texting or on a website. I could possibly add language to my Attorney-Client Agreement. Some of my senior clients prefer text messages to quick emails, so I need to get up to speed.

I also do not understand why my personal number is showing up on the registration forms.

    I need serious assistance.

    Hi Deena

Welcome to the Community. For future reference, if you don't see a thread that matches your inquiry, you can ask a question on the Grasshopper Discussions home page. You will see the option on the top right-hand side.

Regarding SMS registration, registration is required for all SMS traffic regardless of volume or type of messages. You must register even if you only use messaging to communicate 1-1 with your contacts and do not send bulk messaging campaigns.

During registration, you will be asked to share details about the types of messages you send (your use case) and the expected volume of messages. It is there where you can share that you will only be sending text messages internally to employees who have opted in to receive text messages.

As an alternative, GoTo Connect, offers a chat feature where you could bypass registration. Or you could use messaging apps like WhatsApp.

If you have any questions around the registration process, let us know! Do keep in mind that Registration is mandatory and Carriers will block all outbound messages from unregistered phone numbers by February 3, 2025. You can find more information about the process here
