Problem logging into Mac

I'm not at all computer literate, so I might be using completely inaccurate terms. Anyways, I'm having trouble logging into my apple laptop. When I log in all I see is the background along with the top toolbar. If I have something open on it, I am unable to see it, all I see is the background. Can ayone help?
