Manually Connect Device and Inventory Records

When you have a system that you want to reset or otherwise reinstall the operating system on, once GoTo Resolve is re-installed this shows up as a new "device". The old device record and associated inventory record still exist. If you delete this old device record and initiate a sync, it will not connect the new record to the existing inventory record.

It would be nice if you could manually or otherwise connect that old inventory record to the new device for situations like this.

As it currently is, you have to also delete that old inventory record (make sure to take note of any info you added to it first!) and then run a sync to create a new inventory record as well, which you then will need to add any additional information that may have been in the old inventory record already.

    Hi tophneal

Yes, this feature functions primarily by identifying duplicate entries through the serial number.

I am not aware of having the merge option on the panel on the roadmap, could you create a idea post and we can share this with the team? Thank you.

Thanks for the information and documentation, KateG !

Is this feature only available if the Sync Devices function recognizes duplicate serial numbers? I'm looking at 2 identical records right now, but syncing doesn't seem to be giving me the banner shown on that linked page. Has there been any internal discussion of putting the merge option in the panel that appears when selecting multiple devices, or should I create a new idea post for that?

Hi tophneal nice to see you.

We did introduce a feature a few months ago for duplicate hardware asset management.

This feature allows asset managers to efficiently identify, review, and handle duplicate asset entries. This update addresses common scenarios where duplicates are necessary (such as re-imaging devices or manufacturer-issued default serial numbers), allowing for accurate and comprehensive inventory management. With the new feature, users can view duplicates, label them for review, merge records to preserve asset history, or remove unneeded entries.

What ended up becoming of this idea? I fight with this A LOT when reissuing devices or reinstalling an OS. It makes a complete mess of our device inventory, as well as a bunch of extra work for myself when I need a clean(er) list of our inventory. It's incredibly annoying and often makes the device inventory feel pretty useless because of how much manual intervention is required.

If it was implemented, is there documentation that I'm just not noticing?

Really looking forward on this topic. Can't wait to update synced managed devices in inventory via import! Any ETA for this feature?

    Hi TimothyD

This is currently being worked for release next year.

We are working on a solution where devices with the same serial numbers as assets already in the inventory list can be imported and agents will get notified about potential duplicates to then be able to either keep duplicates, remove or merge data.
